About The Cold Box™
In 1999, Climate Controlled Containers Inc.'s President and Founder, Ken Broussard, had already long been in the business of manufacturing fire/ safety equipment and aluminum shipping containers. Because of his background in fire fighting and emergency response equipment, he had the idea that an autonomous, self-contained refrigerated shipping container for palletized cold goods would be valuable in disaster response and during post-disaster reconstruction. The realization that this would fill the gaps in conventional refrigerated freight shipping service, which requires hiring a whole refrigerated truck even for single-pallet shipments, became apparent. The concept of the pallet-sized climate controlled shipping and storage container was born.
During the years of development, product research showed the need and markets for The Cold Box™ was far more extensive than originally supposed. Because the unit is autonomous with a 100-hour hold time capability the advantages continued to mount.
The economic value of The Cold Box™ was also underestimated, originally. In addition to the anticipated emergency service, the unit’s ability to be transported without generating more heat than a 100W light bulb became an invaluable and essential selling point. This meant, for the first time, refrigerated freight could be consolidated rather than just assigned to separate "reefer" trucks. The cargo could then be consolidated with as many as 10 different temperatures on a common carrier. Indeed, with proper packing, it could even be consolidated with non-refrigerated freight. This possibility was especially significant for high-value temperature-critical items for which an uninterrupted temperature-band-maintaining chain of custody (the cold-chain) must be unbroken.
In an era when fuel prices for refrigerated transportation are increasing dramatically, the savings in fuel alone helps keep the price of smaller payloads of temperature-sensitive goods under control. Product handling, storage, transfer and assurance all experience cost savings with the use of the container.
Ken Broussard originally envisioned the pallet-sized climate controlled shipping and storage container as part of his existing business group. When the real scope of its applications became apparent, he established Climate Controlled Containers Inc. to be devoted entirely to developing and advancing the new Cold Box™ technology for numerous applications worldwide. Climate Controlled Containers Inc. strives to maintain the highest standards of quality and service to ensure the The Cold Box™ works to improve people's lives.
